COMMUNITY
& ARTS PROJECTS
As part of the wider programme and an extension to the ‘Exaggerate Everything’ exhibition BACKLIT will
continue to explore the history of mental health, the impact to individuals and communities and the local area
where the gallery is situated.
The site of the first county Asylum at King Edwards Park, Sneinton (1812) being the focus of the project and
the research will cover; humanitarian and legislation with the wider consideration of gender, sexuality and
class. We have undertaken independent research and work with Community Research Volunteers in the local
area to deliver a series of activities. The research collated has resulted in an artist commission and online
resources.
The Nottingham Asylum Project 2020 is a collaboration between BACKLIT, National Justice Museum, University
of Nottingham (Geography Department), STOP TRA (Sneinton Tenants Outreach Project), Soft Estate and artist Benjamin Rostance.
